It’s been a long wait for many. Those who started playing the God Of War series on Playstation 2 have been treated to two brilliantly designed and beautifully gory games which chronicles the violent story of Kratos and his quest for absolute power. Both God Of War and God of War 2 were called masterpieces by many but above all else, they were fun. I think any game where the main character is a blood thirsty lunatic who duel wields two lethal swords swinging from the end of chains is bound to hit the right note! And while it left many fans of the series hungry for more it begged the question: can the developers pull this one off?

Good news! It seems that they have. God of War 3 starts off seeing Kratos climbing to the top of Mt. Olympus with Gaia only to be thrown off by Zues and sent to the underworld. You must fight your way out the Kratos way, which is murdering anyone who stands in your way and find a way to destroy the Gods. To do this you are given some of the most destructive melee weapons imaginable and you can use them in ways to cause the most amount of damage possible. Against certain tougher enemies, the game cuts to a “minigame” where you must press the correct button at the right time to perform faster kills on the enemies. You can equip spells and magic, which unlike the previous games are restricted to the type of weapon you are holding. Add this to the fact that Kratos is a deranged Spartan head case with enormous strength and it might sound like overkill but this is God Of War! You are fighting enemies 100 times your size from early on in the game, not to mention new creatures who are ready to take your head off if you so much as look at them.

Graphically the game is incredible, with massive detail on all characters and objects and animations which show just how powerful the PS3 actually is and what it can do. Also, there is no difference between the in-game interactive scenes and the cut scenes and it keeps the action flowing nicely. But if you are new to the series, I recommend playing the first two games if you can because GOW 3 takes up exactly where the previous game finished and as the story is a huge part to God Of War (it’s not all just mindless violence y’know) it’s worth catching up before you play this. There is still a lot of depth to the game and a lot to the character of Kratos and what his struggle is. But to everyone else, the long wait is over. It’s time to get murdering… Spartan style.
